Fall Weather

What a beautiful, albeit cold, morning. Hazy emerald tufts of grass reflecting the morning sun like millions of little diamonds slowly burning out and turning back to that crisp, deep green as they refract the final rays of light that are simultaneously the thing destroying them and making them beautiful. I find it to be wonderfully poetic, only embellished by the impermanence of it all. While it happens a few months out of the year, the first one each year is particularly special; it brings with it a level of destruction to match it’s visual allure.

We were growing some flowers that we’d wanted to let go to seed, but with this frost it seems that we have run out of time for all of them to make it to seed. Our marigolds have been frost burnt, but I think we will get some viable seeds out of them. However our morning glories were late bloomers, despite their monumental growth (and sprawl) they have only been flowering for a few weeks. I’ll have to carefully comb over the now floppy and frost-burnt vines to look for at least one cluster of viable seeds.

We also still have a few hardier vegetables in our garden, but it seems like we’ll have to harvest those soon if we don’t wish to lose any bit of it before they’re unable to take the cold anymore. And then it will be time to cover it all with a thick layer of mulch to protect it for the winter and get us ahead come spring. Hopefully we will have some time to get to some of that (or maybe all of it) today and tomorrow.

Unfortunately that’s all for today, its been a busy week with the regular job (see the last post!). Finally get a day off tomorrow, so plan on making good use of the time given the sudden change to the cold weather.

Be good to one another, it’s far too easy to focus our attention like a spotlight and miss the bigger picture.
